I finished the course “The Data Science of Healthcare, Medicine, and Public Health, with Barton Poulson” taught by Barton Poulson. The course addresses from a non-technical point of view different sectors in which it is possible to exploit data science.


Data analytics now plays a crucial role in managing our health data. There are several ways to apply data science to medicine and public health. The amount of data is set to increase more and more among genetic tests, genealogy, blood tests, brain scans and other sources that are changing the theory and practice of health care. There are several methods to analyze all this data including artificial intelligence and predictive modeling.

There are therefore several fields of interest for medical engineering:

  • Cancer treatment and prevention
  • Mental health
  • Epidemiology
  • Health
  • Predictive models

Each of these topics requires further investigation and in-depth analysis of data processing ethics.

The potential in medicine is very broad and several scholars in the field believe that big data in medicine can bring about profound improvements in healthcare. Innovations in healthcare have a positive impact on the patient. With more concrete information it will be possible to improve the state of health and calibrate personalized therapies in a better way.
