Let’s see in detail a practical realization of a workstation following some ergonomic standards and new technologies present in the consumer market such as the thunderbolt 3 port.

Workstation

After several evolutions, the final station sees a 180cm desk completely free. At the rear there is a 34” curved monitor with wall support and audio speakers with floor support. The monitor support uses the VESA mount and provides for 3-axis orientation. It maintains a fixed height, designed to reduce cervical stress, and allows complete rotation of ± 180 ° with a direction perpendicular to the monitor itself and rotation of ± 15° with a vertical axis. Added to this is the possibility of moving forward and backward. Clearly, the height has been calibrated to ensure maximum visual comfort and reduce stress on both the neck and lower back.

There are two Wharfedale loudspeakers oriented according to the classic rules of the isoceles triangle, looking for the best between the ideal distances and the dimensions of the environment.

To fix the heights of the monitor (with respect to the eyes) and of the speakers (with respect to the ears), clearly linked together, it was necessary to fix the height of the desk and the chair. Clearly the chair guarantees standard ergonomics for the seat and height levels such that the shoulders are relaxed allowing you to write on the keyboard comfortably. The back rests best on the backrest and the neck lies straight. This requires, for shorter users, the presence of a footrest that allows you to correctly distribute the weight and avoid slipping on the chair.

Added to this are two other very important peripherals: keyboard and mouse. Two Logitech devices were chosen, preferring quality materials and devices that, even after many hours of use, would cause the least possible discomfort to avoid problems such as tendinitis and the like. Added to this is a good wide pad that allows you to hold the keyboard steady and slide the mouse easily.

Thunderbolt ports

The great advantage of this station comes out with the introduction and widespread use in the consumer market of devices equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port. This port, in the form of Usb C, is now more than widespread in most laptops. medium / high range and led to the introduction in the market of numerous Thunderbolt Docks and even more Usb C Hubs.

Through these devices it is possible to connect, through a single cable, different peripherals. The Thuderbolt interface was developed by Intel in collaboration with Apple. It allows a maximum transmission speed of 10 Gbit / s bidirectional, therefore up to 20 Gbit/s for each connector. However, most of the UsbC Hubs on the market are limited to the speed of USB 3.1, of 7.2 Gbit/s, still more than enough for most consumer configurations.

In addition, power delivery up to 60W is also supported and in more advanced devices even up to 100-150W. This also allows you to charge your laptop via the same single cable. So, in a typical configuration, imagine arriving at your desk and connecting the laptop to this single cable and having it immediately connected to a monitor, mouse and keyboard, ethernet network, power supply, audio, etc. Then imagine leaving, just unplug the cable and take away the laptop, then you can go to another prepared desk and reconnect.

In the consumer field, cheaper products are also valid, such as the widespread Usb C or 3.1 hubs. However, these hubs allow you to connect multiple peripherals via a single cable. These configurations have been tested in various areas:

  • Video editing
  • Programming
  • Business and office
  • CAD and design
  • Gaming
